Taekwondo WTF vs ITF

Image
WTF : Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. Strong control over its huge population of member countries. HQ building is the well-known "Kukkiwon." ITF : used to be controled by Gen. Choi Hong Hi, but after his death there were splits and now there are several rival ITF bodies. Largest one is probably based out of North Korea. Others in Europe, etc. Lesser population worldwide. Now, WTF TKD is this behemoth of an organization and you'll find WTF TKD practiced in the farthest reaches of the world - from the high mountains of the Himalayas to the villages of Africa. The other day CNN was showing Taliban/Al Qaida training in Afghanistan, and guess what, these recruits were kicking those WTF kicking paddles (those kidney-shaped ones) with WTF style kicks - padachagi, doubles, triples, axe-kicks, etc. complete with tournament style "wachaa" kihaps! UNIFORMS: ITF = open-front jackets with black belts having a black trim at the bottom of the jackets and a blac...

Jhoon Rhee, Athletic Ambassador of Taekwondo, Dies at 86

Jhoon Rhee , a grandmaster of the Korean martial art taekwondo, who helped popularize it in America, taught hundreds of congressmen how to spar and trained with Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee, died on April 30 in Arlington, Va. He was 86. The cause was complications of postherpetic neuralgia, his daughter Meme Rhee said. He focused on taekwondo as a way to inculcate fitness and discipline, not just a method to thrash an opponent. “My philosophy is: What is so great about beating people?” Mr. Rhee told The Washington Post in 2000. “Most sports only emphasize winning, but I want to transform the training in the gym to human qualities. From enduranc...

A pioneer in the Korean martial arts and a two-time Black Belt Hall of Fame inductee, the taekwondo master was one of the first to spread the kicking art in America, and he promoted it tirelessly until he  died on april 30, 2018 . All martial artists would do well to heed Jhoon Rhee’s advice, especially if they’re interested in developing power, speed and accuracy at the advanced levels of training.  — Editor One of the most common mistakes all martial artists make — not just  taekwondo  students — is assuming that the positions and techniques they learn as a white belt are for beginners and the positions and techniques they will learn as a black belt are somehow more effective. So says taekwondo legend Jhoon Rhee. He claims there is little, if any, difference between the moves a newcomer learns during his first few months and the self-defense moves a 20-year veteran would use on the street. ADVANCED TECHNIQUES IN TAEKWONDO “So-called advanced techniq...
